WHAT BLACK AND GREY REALISM IS
Black and grey realism uses one ink. Black gets thinned into lighter and lighter washes of grey, and every shadow, highlight, and skin tone comes from those values. It works the way a pencil drawing works.
There's no color to lean on. If the values are wrong the piece looks flat, and no bright ink can save it. You see the drawing skill or you don't.

Four problems separate clean healed realism from work that falls apart. Taylor plans every piece around them.
SMOOTH VALUE BLENDS
Grey washes have to fade with no hard banding. That takes layered passes at the right depth, done slowly. Rushed shading shows up as stripes once the piece heals.
PLANNED CONTRAST
Solid black anchors a realism piece. Taylor maps where the darkest darks go before the needle starts, so the design still reads from across a room.
HOW IT AGES
Ink spreads a little as skin ages. Realism only holds up when the artist leaves room for that spread. Packed detail with no breathing room blurs together within a few years.

A sleeve has to move with the muscle under it. Taylor designs each session around the full limb, so the finished piece reads as one composition from wrist to shoulder.

Black-based pigment holds its edges longer than most color inks, which fade at different rates in the sun. A well-planned black and grey piece still reads clean decades in. Sunscreen helps either way.
